Board Members

Peter Blackburn

Chair

Peter’s involvement in sport includes experience as a competitor, administrator and educator at local, national and international levels. He represented Australia in Badminton at two Olympic Games and four Commonwealth Games, winning four bronze medals, captained Australia for almost ten years and was ranked as high as 7 in the world. Peter extended his sports involvement, into the Media World as a specialist television commentator at 4 Olympic Games as well as 3 Commonwealth Games. His involvement locally includes Executive and Board Committee positions for the Ballarat Sportsmen’s Club, Ballarat Sports Hall of Fame, Ballarat Olympians and previously seven years’ experience in lecture/sessional teaching at the University of Ballarat (Human Movement). Peter is very aware of the importance of local support and encouragement to an athlete and how it can be the foundation stones in their journey to reach their dreams and achieve their goals.

John Burt

Vice Chair

John has been a great contributor to the Ballarat local community and sport scene for many years. A retired school principal and former Mayor of Ballarat, John is a strong believer of locals supporting locals both on and off the sporting field. John is a member of the Redan Football Club ‘Hall of Fame’ and ‘Team of the Century’. He has also enjoyed participating in tennis, rowing and athletics at school and is now a keen marathon and ironman competitor. John brings a wealth of knowledge and experience from running organisations such as the Ballarat Specialist School and has received Life Membership of the Ballarat Sportsmen’s Club as well as a recipient of the ‘Ballarat Sports Administrator of the Year Award’.

David Chalmers

Treasurer

David has been the Treasurer of the Ballarat Sports Foundation for the last 10 years. He is passionate about sport and supporting the local community by assisting the Ballarat Sports Foundation achieve its objectives in providing financial support to local athlete’s. He understands the financial challenges many athletes face and is pleased to be able to encourage athletes to continue their journey. David is a Chartered Accountant and is the owner of Chalmers Advisory a local accounting and advisory business.

Colin McClelland

Colin became a Founding Board member of the Ballarat Sports Foundation in 1994 following his community interest and ongoing sponsorship through the Rotary Club of Ballarat South.  He has a keen interest to see our youth develop their full potential across all areas of endeavour.  It is his wish to encourage youth to become champions today and our community leaders tomorrow.  He has been actively involved in both sports participation and administration, including football premiership teams for Donald, Ballarat and Swan Hill, competitive tennis, squash, badminton and athletics. During his tennis days with St Peters Tennis Club and with the help of his wife Glenda, organised up to thirty junior tennis teams each Saturday in the Ballarat Churches Tennis Association. In 2019, Colin was awarded the ‘Ballarat Sports Administrator of the Year Award’.

David Brehaut

David is an experienced journalist with more than 40 years Victoria in the profession across regional Victoria. He has reported on the Ballarat sporting landscape for The Courier for more than 20 years and has a wealth of knowledge regarding the history and development of many sports and sportspeople in the region.

David has a passion to see sportspeople develop their skills and achieve their best, whether it be  competing regionally, or at state, national and international level.

He continues to be a great advocate for the Ballarat Sports Foundation, having been a board member since moving to Ballarat in the late 1990s – providing great insights into the effort and commitment required by athletes in various sports and also the unique demands of high and low profile sporting pursuits.

Ebony Ebenwaldner

A competitive swimmer from a young age, Ebony achieved an Open National level, is a previous winner of the Lorne Pier to Pub (2004 & 2008), currently holds many State and National Masters Swimming Records and is a World Ranked Masters Swimmer. In 2020 Ebony took up the sport of rowing and within a short period, has established herself as one of the country’s best female master’s rowers. She also competes in Indoor Rowing, placing in the Top 10 at the 2022 World Virtual Indoor Rowing Championships. Ebony has held executive roles on the Midlands District Swimming Association since 2019 and brings with her a wealth of experience in Marketing and Communications. She is very passionate about helping athletes of all ages achieve their sporting goals.

Grant McKechnie

A passionate supporter of local sport from grassroots to growth at the highest international level. Grant provides valuable knowledge through involvement in the physiological development of athletes and as an Accredited Exercise Physiologist, Accredited Exercise Scientist, Myotherapist and Educator. He is looking to support and encourage ‘their best’ in each individual athlete as they aim to achieve their personal goals and sporting ambitions. Grant has worked closely with many individuals and teams and is currently involved in rowing crews competing at both state and national level.

Greg McIntosh

Greg has been involved in the Ballarat sporting scene for many years since moving from his home town of Stawell. Marathon running, cycling, ironman, local football and a member of the Ballarat Sportsman Club for ten years. The father of a daughter who has cycled professionally, Greg also understands the financial challenges facing athletes and their families and the need where a little bit of funding can go a long way to assist in competition, personal promotion and life experiences. Professionally Greg has more than 30 years as a Manager in the Health and Human Services sector and in this time has been involved in supporting vulnerable people to fulfil their potential.

Juri Kaczkowski

Juri is a retired Health and Physical Education teacher from St Patrick’s College Ballarat. He has always maintained an enthusiasm for local sport, having personally been involved in a range of sporting activities at both junior and senior levels. As an educator Juri has witnessed the many positive benefits of young people’s involvement in sport both physically and mentally. He is keen to encourage young people to continue their journey in sport and grow as they experience ‘life lessons’ through the engagement in their sporting endeavours.

Lee Prentice

Lee’s interest and love of sport is evident through her involvement both as a competitor and administrator. Her commitment to both netball and football includes five years involvement as the Football Operations Manager at the North Ballarat City Football Netball Club and the North Ballarat Roosters Football Club as well as a long involvement with the Illabarook Football Club both as a netball player and committee member. Lee’s many years of service was acknowledged when awarded the Administrator of the Year for the Lexton Plains Football Netball League. Lee’s love of sport began with Little Athletics at YCW, representing her school at high jump and discus, netball, basketball and hockey, before playing representative netball for Ballarat at a senior level. She understands the importance of each stepping stone a young athlete requires to take in achieving the goals in sport and life.

Morgan Murphy

Morgan has been involved with Ballarat Sports Foundation since its inception and was it’s Chair for 13 years from 1996. He is a physiotherapist practicing in Ballarat for many years with a special interest in the management of sports injuries. Morgan has been involved in swimming circles at local, state and national level and is a nationally Accredited Silver Level Swim Coach. Morgan’s commitment and ongoing contribution to sport includes 27 years as National Medical and Technical Classifier for Australian Paralympic Swimming.
